The best indie music festivals in the world
We <3 indie festivals. They're independently run and are great places to discover new artists & make new friends. Check our list of favorites.

Big-brand festivals are everywhere. But for a lot of people in the music industry—agents, bookers, artists, and fans alike—the ones worth talking about are the independently run events that prioritize curation, community, and atmosphere over corporate scale.
What makes a festival “indie”?
An indie festival is independently organized—typically by a small team, a collective, or a local community rather than a major events company or private equity-backed promoter. The lineup tends to be hand-picked, ticket numbers are often deliberately capped, and the focus is on the experience rather than revenue per square meter.
They’re also, generally speaking, a better place to discover new artists. Because indie festivals aren’t chasing mainstream headliners, they have room to take chances on emerging talent and local favorites.
We asked our booking agent and manager friends to share the indie festivals they love. Here’s their list.
Lighthouse Festival (Croatia)
Dates: 3–7 June 2026
Location: Lanterna, Tar, Istria, Croatia
Website: lighthouse.plus
Kevin Stein (Dealmaker @ SystemOne) recommends checking out the Lighthouse Festival. Held at the Lanterna peninsula in Croatia, Lighthouse Festival combines electronic music with a seaside vacation atmosphere. International DJs play by the Adriatic Sea, with accommodation options ranging from hotels to private apartments on the peninsula.
Lighthouse began as a small Austrian-Croatian collaboration and retains many indie values—artist-centric booking, limited tickets, and an off-grid feel despite growing significantly popular in recent years.
The Crave (Netherlands)
Dates: 6 June 2026 (13:00–23:30)
Location: Zuiderpark, The Hague, Netherlands
Website: thecrave.nl
Recommended by Niels van Loo from Parachute Booking, The Crave is an independent Dutch electronic music festival with a strong community following. It’s a one-day event, but it punches well above its weight in terms of lineup quality and atmosphere.
Waking Life (Portugal)
Dates: 17–22 June 2026
Location: Crato, Alentejo, Portugal
Website: wakinglife.pt
Set by a tranquil lake in Portugal’s Alentejo region, Waking Life is organized by a non-commercial, artist-run collective. It’s designed to avoid mainstream festival models entirely—every element, from stage design to food, is built around artistic contribution and a cooperative mindset.
It’s a shining example of what an indie festival can be at its best: self-sufficient, sustainable, and genuinely communal.
Kave Fest (France)
Dates: 3–5 July 2026
Location: Château de Gisors, Eure, Normandy, France
Website: kavefest.com
{{max-1182-19}}
Kave Fest is proof that an indie festival can do whatever it wants—and often the weirder the concept, the more memorable the experience. There’s something genuinely unique about watching a deathcore band perform in a Norman castle.
Tiree Music Festival (Scotland)
Dates: 10–12 July 2026 (15th edition)
Location: Crossapol, Isle of Tiree, Scotland
Website: tireemusicfestival.co.uk
Set on a remote Scottish island, the Tiree Music Festival blends traditional folk with modern acoustic and indie performances. Founded by local musicians and residents about 15 years ago, it has maintained a strong grassroots ethos focused on local culture and sustainability. And getting there is half the adventure!
Butik Festival (Slovenia)
Dates: 14–18 July 2026
Location: Park Narave Sovodenj, Tolmin, Slovenia
Website: butikfestival.com
Set in the scenic Soča Valley, Butik Festival offers an intimate electronic music experience in some of Slovenia’s most beautiful natural terrain. Attendees camp by the river, and the lineup focuses on atmosphere and curation over name recognition.
Recommended by our very own Kevin, Butik is organized by a small independent team passionate about music and nature. It’s not owned by a big events company, and it keeps ticket numbers low to preserve the intimacy that makes it worth attending. The 2026 edition is reportedly already sold out—worth getting on the waitlist if you can.
Garbicz Festival (Poland)
Dates: 30 July–3 August 2026
Location: Camp Wielki, Lake Wielicko, Garbicz, Poland
Website: garbiczfestival.com
{{max-1182-20}}
Garbicz has built a loyal following precisely because of its size and intimacy. It’s the kind of festival where the lineup is (almost!) secondary to the feeling of the place.
Alcatraz Festival (Belgium)
Dates: 6–9 August 2026
Location: Sportcampus Lange Munte, Kortrijk, Belgium
Website: alcatraz.be
{{max-1182-21}}
Alcatraz sits in an interesting position—large enough to attract major metal and rock names, but with roots and an ethos that remain meaningfully independent.
Max notes that when it comes to artist hospitality, the Dutch and Belgian festivals are probably the best in Europe by far.
Houghton Festival (UK)
Dates: 6–9 August 2026
Location: Houghton Hall, Norfolk, England
Website: houghtonfestival.co.uk
Also recommended by Niels, Houghton is a curated electronic music festival set in the grounds of Houghton Hall in the Norfolk countryside, known for its exceptional sound systems, underground lineup, and immersive setting.
Good2U Festival (Germany)
Dates: 14–17 August 2026
Location: Kühlhaus Görlitz, Saxony, Germany
Website: good2u.de
Recommended by both Kevin and Niels, Good2U is a fully independent, grassroots electronic music festival with a strong DIY ethos, no corporate sponsors, and an audience size that’s deliberately capped to preserve intimacy. The focus is on connection, community, and creative freedom.
Why indie festivals matter to the industry
For many booking agents and other music industry professionals, indie festivals are one of the best places to discover new artists. A slot at Garbicz or Waking Life can be more valuable for an emerging act than a support slot at a massive commercial festival, because the audience is engaged, the atmosphere is intimate, and word travels fast.
They’re also good for the industry’s soul. In a sector that can feel increasingly driven by revenue and image, indie festivals are a reminder of why most people go to shows in the first place: a love for music & searching for genuine connection.
